DID YOU KNOW?

Orphaned children had very hard lives. Orphans were often forced to be slaves. Sometimes, the Maya used orphans as sacrifices.

It was the responsibility of parents to educate their children about the gods and religious ceremonies. The children of farmers or craftspeople usually didn’t learn to read because they had to work. So, it was up to their parents to teach them important practical skills they would use when they grew up.

Girls born in lower social classes learned to run a home, care for children, and cook. Boys studied their fathers’ trade. The son of a mason learned how to cut stone. The child of a farmer learned how to plant and harvest crops, for example.
